After one year of the Polish School there is still as much interest in learning in our school as there was a year ago: 70 children as young as 3 and as old as 18 from the Newry and Mourne District, and Co. Louth, come to school every Saturday, and 9 fully qualified teachers teach them in 7
different age groups. The main objectives of the Polish Supplementary School are: to forge Polish national identity, to teach Polish culture and history, and to make our children proud of the country of their parents.

When you leave your own country and move out to another, you cross not only geographical boundaries, but above all, you cross this invisible   but still firmly marked - psychological border. A person who has been living outside his or her own country is no longer the same person from the days before emigration. He or she loses something and gains something at the same time. In creating the Polish Supplementary School, we want our children to gain as much as possible,, but to loose as little as possible too. We want them to draw upon the heritage of both countries.

This academic year our school intends to open up to non Polish children. We plan to start a course of Polish as a foreign language and give lectures on our history and culture.
The Polish Supplementary School in Newry is not an island. From the start we intended to facilitate our integration with the Irish community. Drawing upon the experiences of our two cultures, two narrations of history should only enrich us further and make us more sensitive to the mutual needs of both communities.
